five rings of corruption

February 18, 2002 under Politics

Winter Olypics; quite the joke if you ask me. The Olympic organization is one of the most corrupt organizations in the world. Blah blah blah Jamie Sale and David Pelletier. Blah blah blah nutty judge from France. I don’t really care since figure skating isn’t even a sport, in my opinion. What I do care about is Canada’s mens hockey team. While the passing hockey fan may think “wow, Team Canada has all the best from the NHL“. I tend to disagree. We put in our trust in the greatest hockey player to have ever lived, Wayne Gretzkey, to put together a gold medal team. Well I gotta say that Wayne may have been one hell of a player, but he’s not the smartest person in the world. From my point of view, he picked his buddies like Mario Lemieux, Al MacInnis, Joe Nieuwendyk and Ed Belfour. He also picked good ol’ sponge head Eric Lindros and Theo Fluery, both of whom have seen better days. I side with Don Cherry and many others wondering why Wayne overlooked those having great seasons like Joe Thornton and Jose Theodore. Wayne picked a team that’s big when he should’ve picked a better skating team that would be suited to the larger ice surface. This remeinds me of my hockey days when I played for one of Timmins‘ two AAA bantam teams (note: bantam = 15-16 yr olds). The talent pool was big in Timmins that year and it warranted two AAA bantam teams to compliment all of the AA and house league bantam teams from Timmins. I played for LaRonde and we were listed as AAA Minor. The other team, Miller Paving, was listed as AAA major. The reason for the “minor” and “major” descriptors was unclear…politics most likely. Mill Paving consisted of a large team. Even most of the forwards were six feet or taller. Even with all the size they had, they lacked speed and frequently lost in major tournaments. Our team, on the other hand, had a good balance. We had big tough defencemen, grinding forwards, and fast forwards (I fell into this category). We won…a lot; the TMHA (Timmins Minor Hockey Association) season, many tournaments and came in second in the NOHA (Norhtern Ontario Hockey Association) Playoffs. Many felt that we should’ve been the major team. But such is the case when it comes down to who you know and not what you can do.

Back to my Team Canada rant…and let’s face it, Pat Quinn is not a good coach. The only reason the Leafs are doing as well is they are is because of talent; Quinn has little to do with it. So why is he coaching Team Canada? Politics. Gettin’ spanked by Sweden and barely beating Germany is downright embarrasing. I hate to think of what will happen today against the Czechs.

Oh and we finally bought a TV for that DVD player that Dena got me for Christmas 🙂
