rip it up

March 27, 2002 under Computers, Internet, Music

I like to rant about music because I tend to think I’m somewhat knowledgable on the subject. GASP, I’m not just a computer geek. After what seemed like an eternity, my copy of Local H‘s Here Comes The Zoo finally arrived from CDNow a couple of days ago. As soon as it arrived, I immediatley ripped the CD using AudioCatalyst so I could listen to it at work. Man, is it nice to pick up albums like this one. I had to look at the copyright year on the CD sleeve to be certain…yup, 2002. In a time when popular music is dominated by talentless boy/girl bands, rap-metal hybrid clones, guitar bands “experimenting with loops and synths” and bands searching for the perfect pop-rock hook (read: ripping off The Beatles and R.E.M.), along comes Here Comes The Zoo. It’s a rock album, plain and simple, and not an ounce of wussiness or pretention to be found. Now I’m not bashing Radiohead or the Butthole Surfers for varying their sound in 2001; those were some of my favourite albums of that year. But Local H have satisfied something almost primal…the urge to effen rock with fists a wavin’. And at the same time, Here Comes The Zoo is still splattered with the wit and smart-ass humor that Local H is known for. With a slew of new albums due this year (Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Foo Fighters and Oasis), Here Comes The Zoo has been a great way to kick the year off. If you’re a fan of music, keep an ear out for this album. And yes, I do manage write some code in between my music rants 🙂
