w00t t3h demo

September 17, 2002 under Computers, Software

We’ve returned from Crystal Falls in one piece. And of course, like I predicted, the UT2K3 demo was released on Friday while I was there without a broadband connection in sight. For those interested, you can download the demo here. We got back to Kitchener at approximately 9:30PM on Sunday evening and I began to download the demo at 9:32PM 🙂 At first, I played a few simple bot matches without tweaking any graphic settings and I even used keyboard + mouse instead of my Microsoft Sidewinder DualStrike :O It was impressive. Everything was smooth, even with my measly Pentium III 800MHz (Epic recommends at least a Pentium III or Athlon 733MHz). I think the fact that I have a GeForce4 Ti 4400 and 768MB of RAM may have helped a little. I now know, after playing matches with 8+ bots, that my CPU will slow things down when there’s a lot of onscreen action. However, when I was playing online last night in a few Deathmatch and InstaGib Capture The Flag matches, my framerate remained consistant between 28-40 so I’m happy…for now. As far as my actual play, well…ummm. Let’s just say that playing Warcraft3 on Battle.net has improved my RTS skills, but have eroded my twitch reflexes 🙂 The more I played, the more it all came back to me, luckily 🙂 I have to commend Digital Extremes and Epic. With a little tweaking, they just may have another hit on their hands. Now I have to wait for the retail version of UT2K3 to be released so I can mod for it 😀

we can't come to the internet right now

September 12, 2002 under Life

So you’re trying to get a hold of Dena or yours truly this weekend and you’re wondering to yourself, “Self, where the hell did they go? They’re not on ICQ and they haven’t replied to any email I’ve sent. Rude fux0rs!”. To prevent this scenario from occuring, I’ll take the time now to let all of you out there know that we will be in Crystal Falls this weekend. Dena gets a break from celebrity sighting (a movie, The Devil’s Throat, is being filmed in Cambridge right now starring Sharon Stone and Dennis Quaid) 😉 We’re leaving at noon today and will return sometime this coming Sunday.

On a side note…the UT2K3 demo, affectionately known as “teh demo”, will likely be released sometime this weekend. For you n00bs, yes, that is the correct spelling of teh. I’ll be in a land that’s sans broadband. Oh the irony of it all 😉 So when we return, you know that my first .plan upon our return will be comprised of nothing but yackity yack about the demo 😀 Although, we can’t work on our mod until the retail version of UT2K3 ships since it contains UnrealEd, try visiting our IRC channel at #ut2k3mod gta on UNDERNET. Maybe Barry and/or Russell will be there. Peace out.

moddin'

September 6, 2002 under Computers, Programming, Software

I’m updating this .plan file o’ mine against my better judgement; I really don’t have anything important to say right now. Barry wants me to make mention of the mod for Unreal Tournament 2003 we plan to develop. It’ll be a Grand Theft Auto 3-like mod that uses downtown T-Dot as the setting. Helping us will be Russell Challenger, a co-worker of Barry‘s at Dreamcatcher Games. Russ has experience mapping for other games such as Quake 3 Arena. Barry will be doing 3D modelling and such. And yours truly will be the coder. It’s all ideas right now since Unreal Tournament 2003 won’t be released until sometime in late summer/early fall and the game will ship with the latest version of UnrealEd (what we’ll use to map and code). Originally, the plan was to mod for Quake 3 Arena, but after I mentioned to Barry the advantages of using a truly object-oriented platform over a monolithic one, UT2K3 became the game to use 😉 The fact that a class for vehicle actors is already included in the UT2K3 engine probably sealed the deal 🙂 If you have an IRC client installed on your computer, you can find us up to no good at #ut2k3mod gta on UNDERNET. Here’s a little UnrealScript code snippet of an extremely simple function that I wrote that I may or may not implement in our mod:

// the handiest function imaginable
function ShutBarryUp()
{
   var bool bCR = TRUE;
   var string strBarryMsg = "Barry is pumped that we are making a UT2K3 mod!";

   // mention our mod and watch Barry smile
   DrawText (strBarryMsg, bCR);
}

I’m funny 😉

back from the north

September 4, 2002 under Life

Well, we’re back from Timmins, a little more refreshed than before. Dena and I had a relaxing time, most of which was spent on my parents’ patio. The weather was confortable; warm yet not humid like Kitchener is. Dena even had her first celebrity encounter on Monday. While we were in Pearson waiting for a shuttle to Kitchener, we saw Sum 41. Now she’s becoming quite the celebrity watcher. A movie, The Devil’s Throat, is being filmed in Cambridge right now starring Sharon Stone and Dennis Quaid. A portion of the filming took place last Friday outside of Dena’s office, but alas, we were in Timmins. She’s keeping her eyes peeled 😉

Next weekend, we’re going to Crystal Falls to see Dena’s family. After that, we are stayin’ put and saving cash for Oktoberfest 🙂
