prepare to lose your appetite

October 10, 2003 under Movies

This weekend, Scream is showing the four Texas Chainsaw Masacre movies. They’re obviously doing this as a ramp-up for the upcoming remake of the original one. I’ve been trying to get Dena to watch the original Texas Chainsaw Masacre for the longest time. The second one is decent, the third one is terrible and the fourth one is pointless (but it launched Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey’s careers). But the first one is a classic, right up there with the Godfather, 2001 A Space Oddessy and other classics IMHO. A movie like the original Texas Chainsaw Masacre movie could put the fear of “the stix” in you. Dena’s home town of Crystal Falls, MI could easily be confused with the setting in the movie; sparsley populated with plenty of wooded areas. Here’s some more yakin’ about Dena that she’ll be glad to know that I’m doing. Dena is easily freaked out. She won’t watch the Texas Chainsaw Masacre for fear that she’ll be weirded out when she’s in Crystal Falls, MI, which is where she’ll be using up her remaining vacation days in at the end of the month. I’m not watching the Sound of Music again until she sees that the saw is family 😉

great time of the year

October 10, 2003 under Hockey, Life, Sports

Happy opening of Oktoberfest day! Time for beer and schnitzel.

Yay, the 2003-04 NHL season is under way! Hopefully it’s not the last one for a while.

just use mozilla, folks

October 9, 2003 under Computers, Internet, Programming

Thanks to Barry, I’ve been informed that Safari trips up on my CSS. In my experience my site looks fine on Internet Explorer 6.x, Mozilla 1.x and Opera 7.x on Windows. On Linux, it also looks great with Mozilla 1.x and Konquerer. It seems to me that the problem is either with Safari (can’t handle font-size % values) or an error originating somewhere between the chair and the keyboard. I’d be inclined to think it’s the latter, but it’s likely the former.

My suggestion for an enjoyable web experience, regardless of the websites that you visit, is as follows. If you are running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, use Mozilla as your web browser. If you are running MacOS X, use Mozilla as your web browser. If you are running one of the many Linux distributions, use Mozilla as your web browser. If you are running one of the major Unixes (AIX, HPUX, Irix, etc), use Mozilla as your web browser. If you are running Solaris, use Mozilla as your web browser. If you are running OS/2, use Mozilla as your web browser. See a pattern? Wise software (and hardware) selection makes a big difference.

PS: I’m now also a developer for justCheckers (our project page). King me!

not prego!

October 8, 2003 under Life

This one is for a certain number of inviduals out there (you know who you are):

Dena is susceptible to migraines. So when she says she’s nauseated and “doesn’t feel well in general”, IT DOESN’T MEAN THAT SHE’S PREGNANT.

Thanks.

drained

October 6, 2003 under Computers, Programming

It looks as if the project from hell is over. This, which is a needlessly specialized FTP client, took me ~400 lines of code and one total rewrite (it originally was a Mastercam C-Hook but became a stand-alone app). And this took me ~5000 lines of code with plenty of insane parsing, calculation and data manipulation logic. This project took 5 months of my severely underpaid/underappreciated life away from me and I want those months back.

what did my family ever do to yo la tengo to make you hate them so much?

October 4, 2003 under Movies, Music

School of Rock was entertaining in a non-offensive kind of way. It was sorta like Yo La Tengo‘s video for “Sugarcube”, but with kids and Jack Black.

poor people like me ramble

October 3, 2003 under Life

A funny thing happened today. At work, there’s a soon-to-be-vacant tech support position opening up so we’re recruiting. There were plenty of interviewers today; 4 to be exact. Part of the interview process in our office involves giving the candidates a tour of the office and small meet ‘n’ greets at each office stop. For the first candidate, when my manager got to my office, he said osmething along the lines of “This is Chris. He does software development and technical duties for stuff that the rest of us don’t understand, like anything with a plug.”. Chuckles and move on. He fires off an email after interviewing that candidate asking me what he should say when he gets to my office with the next candidate. I jokingly offered “Code monkey and computer bitch”. He replies with “It should be ‘underpaid'”. This is true. Management sees it but upper management is not in the know and probably never will be. Subsequent visits from candiates either resulted in long speils about third-party Mastercam development and “closer apps” or brief “he’s the comp sci guy” type of quips.

Hey, two posts from me in one day. It’s not record, though. I post much more than that when Barry says/does something stupid that irritates me 😉 Off to see School of Rock tonight ’cause Dena loves Jack Black and I love the rock. Oh and I’m supposed to mention her more often in my blog because I don’t do that enough, apparently 😉 So, here goes…

Dena now likes Sleepytime tea before bed but refuses to try simple chamomille tea (Sleepytime tea is mostly chamomille). Dena makes Belle mad by making smooching noises on the back of her little kitty head. Dena is gonna get her eyes clawed out by Belle when she makes her mad by making smooching noises on the back of her little kitty head. Dena gets a lot of raises and other perks at her job. Dena hates peas but likes pea soup. Dena is obsessed with CSI and CSI: Miami but perfers CSI. Dena has a new pair of golf shoes and she’s excited to try them out. Dena hates the way I fold towels. Dena likes Mike Modano (like you didn’t know that already). Dena is extremely ticklish. Dena perfers my hair to be long, but not too long and definitely not short. Dena hates puzzles that are missing pieces. Dena is amused by people who wonder why we’ve been together for six years and we’re still not married. Dena likes MahJongg. Dena can skate but she can’t stop.

How’s that? 😉

pinhead and shnitzel

October 3, 2003 under Computers, Life, Programming, Software

Dalton McGuinty, eh? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Roktoberfest? Oktoberfest? Nah, Roktoberfest sounds better 😉

I’ve joined Furthurnet as a Java developer. The project page is here. Now I just have to figure out how to CVS the code from SourceForge.

poll vault

October 2, 2003 under Politics

It’s election day in Ontario today. Even if it seems pointless, go vote. Some places in the world don’t have this luxury. Folks in communist countries don’t have a say and the votes of folks in the USA can be ignored by those with the right money/influence.

PS: This weather RAWKS! Good-bye and good riddance to summer.

Saw the Sabres and Lightning pre-season game last night at the Aud. It was decent for an exhibition game.
