heart > talent + money

May 4, 2004 under Hockey, Sports

Wooooo-frickin’-hooooo!!! 🙂 My Flames did it again! They beat those ancient Red Wings. I guess all of Detroit‘s high-priced talent and playoff experience couldn’t match the Flames‘ speed and grit. And there was no beating Kipper. The guy’s squared up to the shooter all of the time, even when he looks like he isn’t.

I’m reminded of all of the people I met at university. Since this is Michigan we’re talking about, a lot of people (many hardly familliar with hockey) were firmly on that Red Wing bandwagon. For good reason, the Wings were loaded with expensive talent and experienced veterans. For a while, it seemed to work for them. But it looks like all of the talent in the world can’t compare to hard work and the desire to win. I guess that bandwagon will be getting light since it appears that the Wings will be doing some roster dumping over the summer.

I’ll go out on a limb and say that the Flames embody everything that professional sports used to be; hard work, team comradery and the desire to win for winning’s sake. Professional sports is now comprised of multimillionaires doing just enough to get that next big paycheck. But not the Flames with one of the smallest payrolls in the league. In this year’s playoffs, the Flames have played like a team in the truest sense of the word.

How many jump folks will jump on the Calgary‘ bandwagon? Who cares? The conference finals are next. Go Flames!
