war-drivin'

September 21, 2004 under Computers, Internet

I’m officially a war-driving wannabe 🙂

On our way to work this morning, traffic on the Homer Watson was at a standstill (gotta love being so close Conestoga College). So I pulled out my notebook, which has a built-in 802.11b/g card, and proceeded to look for available wireless networks in the neighbourhood. Dena wanted to email work to let them know she’d be late. I wanted to find unsecured wireless networks 🙂 And I did. Somebody somewhere within the vicinity of the Homer Watson has a Linksys WiFi router or access point and didn’t secure it up in anyway; the SSID was still ‘linksys’ but I had the good moral judgment to not bother logging into the administrative control panel with the default username/password. So I connected but barely. The signal was weak and the rate was only 5.5MB/sec. I had enough time to connect to our company’s VPN and launch Outlook 2003, but traffic started to move and the connection dropped as I was typing up the email to Dena’s boss 🙁

I think I need to keep a full tank of gas in the car, and a copy of AirSnort running 😉
