snerts and bsd

February 28, 2005 under Computers, Software

Microsoft has a section of their site devoted to non-technical parents of technical kids. Apparently the term ‘snert’ is used to describe on online bully. Who knew?

I’m in search of a Linux distro. I’ll be getting another computer, for free, and I need an OS for it. Maybe I’ll pick up a KVM switch so that we’ll use that computer as our Web/email/IM/general use computer, and our current computer as my Windows development computer/gaming rig. I first thought of FreeBSD since it’s solid and the “ports” feature makes installing/updating applications a snap. Then I thought of the fact that since this computer won’t be a production server or anything, I’ll probably end up installing plenty of things on a whim, and that’s when I decided on Linux. I’ve used Fedora before and liked it but I think RedHat needs to overhault RPM as it’s showing its age. I like Debian boxes, but I hate setting them up. Debian‘s package manager rawks but the install sucks so bad. I’ve narrowed my choices down to two; Gentoo and Ubuntu. If anyone can sway me either way, let me know.

i like python, not actionscript

February 21, 2005 under Computers, Life, Programming, Software

Dena has had a wicked cold or somethin’. I had it a couple weeks ago and it came and went quickly after a couple of nasty days. But Dena’s really been kicked in from this. I think she’s on the mend, though 😉

Barry wants my opinion on what SE|PY is all about. I don’t know. To me, it looks like an Actionscript editor written in Python using the wxPython wrapper for wxWidgets. I’m not a Flash/Actionscript/design type of guy so I don’t know how good it is. And to the end user, it shouldn’t matter what an app is written in. If it’s good, it’s good. Perhaps it’s a wicked text editor for Actionscript. For me personally, if I’m not using Visual Studio for C++, C# or VB, then I’m using ConTEXT or Syn for Java, Perl, PHP, HTML, Python, VBS or even ordinary text files. I sometimes even use those editors if I use Borland‘s free C++ compiler.

Pat must’ve been bummed when he heard about this.

banished words and octorocks

February 20, 2005 under Computers, Life, Software

My alma mater released their annual Banished Words List for 2005. Take a gander.

Dena bought me The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap for the GBA for Valentine’s Day and it’s been keeping me quite occupied 🙂

rollin' my own photo album

February 18, 2005 under ChrisBellini.com, Computers, Hockey, Programming, Sports

Barry says I talk about hockey too much. Meh. I like what I like. What can I say? Ok, I’ll talk about something else.

You may or may not have noticed that I finally finished my pictures section. The reason for the delay was because I couldn’t decide how I wanted to do it. I looked at some packages like Gallery and Coppermine but they don’t allow you to integrate the image gallery into your website unless you’re using some CMS software (which I’m not). So I decided to write my own with PHP. It’s basically a bunch of directory walking and recursion, and I use the GD library to generate the thumbnails on the fly. It’s about 300 lines of code in total; not bad. So now adding a new pictures won’t take me much time. I simply create a new directory in the appropriate “album” and upload the pictures. That’s it. No need to edit any files or anything 🙂

In other news, Pat registered a domain at matterandmedia.com. I’m not sure what it’ll be, but I just know that it’ll take the Web by storm and restore that bubble that burst not too long ago.

piss on the nhl

February 17, 2005 under Hockey, Sports

The cancellation of this year’s NHL season shouldn’t come as too much of a shock.

My feelings are that both Bob Goodenow and Gary Bettman should be fired. Especially Gary Bettman. Moving the teams that sell-out their home games (Winnipeg and Quebec) and expanding into cities where the interest in hockey is far less than synchronized house painting, let alone don’t even get any snow (Nashville, Atlanta, Carolina, Phoenix) was dumb. Changing all the rules of the game for the worse so that it’s more palatable to the whoppin’ 25 ESPN viewers watching hockey was another scoop of dumb on the dumb pile. Why does the NHL have a commisioner who probably never saw a hockey game in his life before taking the job? I nominate Brian Burke (ex-Vancouver Canucks GM) to be the next NHL commisioner. I think that would suit him better than being an analyst for TSN and I could definitely see him helping the league get out of its rut.

I like the fact that the Flames will honour current season ticket holders for next year, or whenever the league starts again. That’s much better than most teams who gave their season ticket holders their money back…after the teams collected a year’s worth of interst on those season tickets.

Folks, there’s still plenty of good hockey to watch out there. The NHL is just one of many.

i heart the ahl

February 14, 2005 under Hockey, Life, Sports

Plenty of hockey this weekend. We went to Copps Coliseum in Hamilton to see some AHL action: Bulldogs and Rochester. We were sitting in a section with the “Derek Roy Fan Club”; a bunch of people from Kitchener who don’t forget that he played junior for the Rangers.

Yesterday, I went to see the Rangers beat up the Frontenacs at the Aud.

What NHL? 😉

Even though it’s a bullshit holiday, happy St. Valentines Day to my wonderful wife Dena! 🙂

i hate the patriots

February 7, 2005 under Football, Sports

The wrong team won the Super Bowl again. And the worst part was that they pre-empted The Simpsons.

chico and pat found their keyboards

February 1, 2005 under Life

Me and my big mouth…

Just when I said that Chico was itchin’ to get a blog of his own, it turns out that he’s already done it 😉

http://cecconi.blogspot.com

And Pat has finally updated his site. Just don’t remind him of how long it has taken him to do so. It will result in you laying lifeless at his feet 😉
