piss on the nhl

February 17, 2005 under Hockey, Sports

The cancellation of this year’s NHL season shouldn’t come as too much of a shock.

My feelings are that both Bob Goodenow and Gary Bettman should be fired. Especially Gary Bettman. Moving the teams that sell-out their home games (Winnipeg and Quebec) and expanding into cities where the interest in hockey is far less than synchronized house painting, let alone don’t even get any snow (Nashville, Atlanta, Carolina, Phoenix) was dumb. Changing all the rules of the game for the worse so that it’s more palatable to the whoppin’ 25 ESPN viewers watching hockey was another scoop of dumb on the dumb pile. Why does the NHL have a commisioner who probably never saw a hockey game in his life before taking the job? I nominate Brian Burke (ex-Vancouver Canucks GM) to be the next NHL commisioner. I think that would suit him better than being an analyst for TSN and I could definitely see him helping the league get out of its rut.

I like the fact that the Flames will honour current season ticket holders for next year, or whenever the league starts again. That’s much better than most teams who gave their season ticket holders their money back…after the teams collected a year’s worth of interst on those season tickets.

Folks, there’s still plenty of good hockey to watch out there. The NHL is just one of many.
