screensavers?

June 1, 2005 under Computers, Programming, Software

Since I’ve been back, I’ve noticed and been informed that an ice cream truck has been stopping by our office. It’s weird to hear the chimes as it drives by my window.

I’ve become a screensaver developer…unintentionally. I must’ve been on crack or have been suffering for many years with a case of mental block, but I always thought that creating Windows screensavers required using some mythical screensaver API functions and such that Microsoft has made available for many years that I’ve never bothered to look up. And since I haven’t used a screensaver in many years, because computer displays are much better now than they were back in the day, I never entertained the idea of creating my own screensaver. But a couple of weeks ago, our company’s president asked me to make a screensaver as a promotional item. I looked into it and discovered that screensavers are nothing more than run o’ the mill EXEs but with their extensions renamed to SCR instead of EXE and taking three arguments; /c to handle screensaver configuration, /p for the preview option and /s for the actual screensaver. I wrote a simple one with C# that looks somewhat similar to the default screensaver in Windows XP. If you’re interested, you can download it here. Keep in mind that you’ll need to have the .NET Framework runtime already installed on your computer. It was my first screensaver, but will it be my last or are flying toasters not far behind? 😉
