desire2be out of the in-house

March 3, 2006 under Life

Today was my last day as the software developer / network administrator / system administrator / web developer at In-House Solutions. I had been there since February 14, 2000. Although I have been working since the age of 13, it was my first job after graduating from university.

Starting Monday, I’ll be joining the Enterprise Applications department at Desire2Learn with the title of Business Systems Developer. What does that mean? I’ll be working on projects that affect the entire company. In this role, I’ll be analyzing and solving enterprise-scale problems, and I’ll get a chance to hone my .NET, SQL (by way of SQL Server, so T-SQL too) and ASP programming skills.

Desire2Learn is a company that develops slick Internet eLearning software, is passionate about technology, and they’re growing like mad. I’m psyched to be joining them. In-House Solutions was a great way for me to become exposed to the “real world” and the tech department there was a great department to be a part of, but I need to keep my career on an upward trajectory and I think Desire2Learn is a perfect company for me to be joining.

    Right on Chris, you deserve it man.

    Goodluck with ASP and SQL..from what I’ve worked on with them they don’t like to get along 100% with each other. I’m done with school and May and right now am trying to setup a job with a company about 1 1/2 hour away from me. So when you and Dena come visit I won’t be in GB to help :O. But can always drive the freeway :D.

    They get along great with each other. If you had a web server running IIS and SQL Server and it had a database with all your DVDs in it, here’s how you’d show all of your DVDs in a web page, instead of emailing us RTFs 😉

    < %
    Dim connMovies       ' database connection
    Dim rsTitleList ' recordset holding titles
    Dim strSQLTitleQuery ' SQL query string

    ' Create a connection to the SQL Server database.
    ' Open the table that contains Jason's huge collection of
    ' DVDs. List the titles of all of them and then close the
    ' database connection.
    Set connMovies = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")

    connMovies.Open "Driver={SQL Server};" & _
                    "Server=jasons_server;" & _
                    "Database=jasons_db;" & _
                    "Trusted_Connection=yes;""

    strSQLTitleQuery = "SELECT title FROM dvds"

    Set rsTitleList = connMovies.Execute(strSQLTitleQuery)

    Do Until rsTitleList.EOF
        Response.WriteLine rsTitleList("Title")
        rsTitleList.MoveNext
    Loop

    rsTitleList.Close

    ' Cleanup
    Set connMovies = Nothing
    Set rsTitleList = Nothing
    %>

    I wrote that ASP script in VBScript using ADO to access the SQL Server database. It would be a little different if ASP.NET and ADO.NET are used.

    Congrats Beans! You do deserve it dude…been working at that other hole long enough:)

  • Jason says:

    I don’t have very many DVDs :P. Ooo I added Misery to my collection :D. But I’m upset it cuts out the parts where she sort of hurts his ankles >:(.

    Maybe it was just the person doing it in our group we had. He kept complaining it didn’t work, maybe he just didn’t know how to do it :/, and I guess I could do that but I love Microsoft so much that I can’t stop ;). Plus I don’t have another computer to run IIS I don’t want it on my computer here, or I could just use Apache :D.

    Way to go Chris!!! Enjoy your new job!!

    Love your sister-in-law!!!!

  • Dave says:

    Thank God you’re outta that other place. 😉

    Best of luck in your career Chris. Come play golf with us sometime! Mondays at Saganaw.
