Last month, a worm that targeted job sites managed to steal user account information from Monster.com. Read the tech-y info about the worm, if you’re inclined. The stolen data is apparently being used to by spammers to conduct scams, instead of recruit for legitimate jobs. I’ve had a Monster account, as well as one at Workopolis, since the day that I graduated from university. So far, I haven’t received one of these scam emails. At least I don’t think I have received any – Gmail‘s spam filter is pretty good.
What I do get lately, though, are plenty of emails and calls from recruiters (90% are headhunters). Within the past couple of months, I’d guess that I get about 5 emails and 3 phone calls per week for “exciting developer positions in the Waterloo area”. Most of them are interesting-sounding positions with the many great companies in the Tech Triangle. However, I’m happy with the company that I work for (developers of computer security software – including antivirus – coincidentally), so I politely tell them that I’m not looking. But wow, I have to laugh at a few of the headhunters that want to nab me for “Java developer” positions. Did you even read my resume, Mr. Headhunter? Now that’s what I call spam.
