it's karma, baby

November 9, 2006 under Blackberry, karma, NTP, Palm, patents, RIM

I’m not a religious zealot, but I do adhere to the notion of karma. I try to live by a “what goes around comes around” ethic, and I feel terrible for enjoying the prospect of NTP getting into hot water. You might remember NTP as the patent holding company that sued RIM a couple of years ago for patent infringement. They settled and life moves on, but it dragged on forever. As an aside…hey RIM, when are the Penguins moving here? 🙂

This week, NTP is suing Palm for patent infringement – here we go again. This might wipe Palm out, should they lose. NTP, in my opinion, contributes nothing to society and the advancement of technology. As such, I was pleased to learn that a software developer is suing NTP for copyright infringement and unjust enrichment. It’s disgusting to see all of this litigation that you can only find in the good ol’ sue-happy US of A. Yet I won’t shed a tear if NTP loses this case and retreats, like the trolling shitsuckers that they are.

waterloo penguins?

October 5, 2006 under Blackberry, Communitech, Hockey, Kitchener, NHL, Sports, Waterloo

Jim Balsillie, chairman of RIM, has purchased the Pittsburgh Penguins. The burning question on a lot of people’s minds is whether the Penguins will move, and if so, where? It’s been speculated that Hamilton was considered. Wouldn’t it be something, though, if they moved the team to Kitchener or Waterloo so as to be closer to RIM‘s offices? It seems like a decent idea to me. We’re a bit further away from Toronto than Hamilton is, so the Leafs will have less reason to cry about encroachment on their market. Plus, Kitchener-Waterloo is within close proximity to plenty of surrounding cities like London, Guelph, St. Catherines and even Barrie; a potential market of well over one million people, if not close to two million. Imagine Sid Crosby and Evgeny Malkin playing in “Blackberry Arena” over on Phillip Street 🙂 That would be wild. We’ll have to wait and see where Balsillie will move the Penguins or if he’ll keep them in Pittsburgh.

Either way, RIM must be selling a whole lot of Blackberries and related software and services 🙂

livin' in the fast ilane

Now this is a good idea, and it’s from local yokels! IMS in Waterloo has created the world’s first solution for hands-free and (more importantly, I believe) eyes-free email communication for when you’re driving. They call it the iLane. It works via Bluetooth with smart phones and Blackberry‘s (another Waterloo invention).

The great thing about this device is that it will probably help in reducing accidents caused by drivers that become distracted while driving. The funny side effect is that we’ll see more people who appear to be talking to themselves in traffic 🙂
