halted by the great firewall of china

November 29, 2006 under China, ChrisBellini.com, Internet

Being an avid reviewer of my own web server logs like the dork that I am, I noticed a referral to my site from:

http://asp-cyber.law.harvard.edu/filtering/list.html

Apparently this is part of a graduate research project at Harvard University. More info about the project can be found here. After a quick search of the listing, I found chrisbellini.com on the list.

ChrisBellini.com is not accessible in China

Hopefully China’s computer geeks are helping their less-technical friends and relatives find anonymous proxy servers so that they can access sites that the Chinese government deems inappropriate. Unless that sort of thing can get you arrested or worse; in that case, don’t do it. What is the law on that anyway?

stop the wordpress-es

July 12, 2005 under ChrisBellini.com

I’ve now completely switched from Blogger to WordPress. I think it’s mint. Don’t you?

My archives were imported without a hitch. Applying the new theme to the rest of my site was a breeze, too. It’s a good thing that when I originally designed my site, I did so with plenty of PHP includes and content in MySQL tables, so switching the look ‘n’ feel was a snap. And if I deside to change the style again down the road, it’ll still be a snap 😀

My old Atom feed will not work anymore so those of you using RSS readers will need to update the URLs. Here are the new ones:

Feed: http://www.chrisbellini.com/wp-rss2.php
Comments: http://www.chrisbellini.com/wp-commentsrss2.php

Oh, and in case you’re wondering what’s in that little LCD monitor that I’m using as a logo. It’s the server component of a client/server app that I wrote in Python to update the LMHOSTS file on client computers. I took a screenshot of my code in ConTEXT and squeezed it into that monitor with my l33t Gimp skills 😛

ch-ch-ch-changes

July 11, 2005 under ChrisBellini.com

It appears that Pat and Barry have already started using WordPress. I’ll be joining the ranks soon. I just have to finish tweaking a theme to my liking, apply it to the rest of my site, and import all of my archived blog entries from the past three years. The import is my main concern at the moment; I have a lot of entries.

rollin' my own photo album

February 18, 2005 under ChrisBellini.com, Computers, Hockey, Programming, Sports

Barry says I talk about hockey too much. Meh. I like what I like. What can I say? Ok, I’ll talk about something else.

You may or may not have noticed that I finally finished my pictures section. The reason for the delay was because I couldn’t decide how I wanted to do it. I looked at some packages like Gallery and Coppermine but they don’t allow you to integrate the image gallery into your website unless you’re using some CMS software (which I’m not). So I decided to write my own with PHP. It’s basically a bunch of directory walking and recursion, and I use the GD library to generate the thumbnails on the fly. It’s about 300 lines of code in total; not bad. So now adding a new pictures won’t take me much time. I simply create a new directory in the appropriate “album” and upload the pictures. That’s it. No need to edit any files or anything 🙂

In other news, Pat registered a domain at matterandmedia.com. I’m not sure what it’ll be, but I just know that it’ll take the Web by storm and restore that bubble that burst not too long ago.

on the move

November 30, 2004 under ChrisBellini.com

I took my last 500mg of Clarithromycin yesterday. I’m not at 100% but definitely feeling better.

I’ve even begun to move my site over from Tripod to MonsterHosting.ca. So far there’s a bit of a cosmetic change but there’s also some server-side stuff going on that I wasn’t able to do at Tripod. You’ll probably notice that the little subtitle underneath “ChrisBellini.com” at the top changes on each page refresh. Chalk that up to a little PHP script that I wrote to randomly generate an index of an element in a database. In a mySQL table, I loaded up a bunch of subtitles and the script randomly selects one. It’s nothing fancy but something I was unable to do with Tripod. More to come.

I made a search plug-in for Firefox. It didn’t take all that long but it’s specific to searching our forum at work. Maybe I’ll put it in my Projects section for prosperity.

packin' my bags [cough, cough]

November 22, 2004 under ChrisBellini.com, Life

Unless you know how to use WHOIS, you probably can’t tell that my domain has changed. I’m almost ready to move my site to the new host, and then kewl things will start to happen. But in the meantime, I need to relax because I just found out that I have pneumonia. Ugh 🙁

switching domain registrars makes you ill

November 20, 2004 under ChrisBellini.com, Life

In six hours, things will be different. I won’t be around when my domain is finally transfered over to Webnames.ca, as I’ll be at a Rangers game. Plus I’m fighting off something that resembles the flu (aches, chills, fever). Stay tuned.

you da monsta

November 18, 2004 under ChrisBellini.com, Life

My site hasn’t disappeared yet. I’ve also switched domain registrars from Domain Direct to Webnames.ca. The transfer process takes approximately ten business days to complete; a lot longer than I imagined. Apparently, at 2:14:42PM (how’s that for exactness) this Saturday, the transfer will be done. Then I’ll be able to use all of the wicked stuff from MonsterHosting.ca that I never had with Tripod; Perl (that actually works all of the time), PHP, Python and mySQL. Plus, you won’t be bombarded by Tripod‘s pop-up ads (if you don’t have the blocking ability) or see an assortment of ASCII characters at the top of the site. There’s even PHP Nuke although I don’t think I have a use for it…yet, anyway. So expect a few changes (for the way better) to ChrisBellini.com 🙂

In the meantime, I’ve been keeping myself busy with Half-Life2. Awesome game, awesome everything. But the Steam signup sucked immensely. It was no doubt a little busy, to say the least.

Finally, one of our cats, Belle, got diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrone. Fun 😉

closet monster

November 14, 2004 under ChrisBellini.com

From now on, my site will be hosted by MonsterHosting.ca instead of Tripod. So if my site appears to have disappeared over the next few days, you’ll know why. Rest assured, it’ll be back shortly.

who wants to get fed?

September 24, 2004 under ChrisBellini.com, Internet

I think I may provide an RSS feed for my blog. Firefox 1.0PR and Thunderbird 0.8 have some new built-in RSS capabilities that look kewl. Also, I still have the idea of moving my site to MonsterHosting in the back of my mind.

In case nobody noticed, all of you out there in Web wonderland can comment on any of my blog entries.
