attaboy, skype

August 21, 2007 under Skype

To follow-up on the Skype outtage of last week, which apparently was caused by too many Windows users logging in after a “Patch Tuesday”, I received this email today:

Hello

You may or may not know but last week Skype wasn’t available for a couple of days. There were a number of reasons for this and I am delighted to say that the problem is now well and truly sorted and everything is back to normal. For those of you who tried to use Skype during that time but couldn’t, we’re very sorry. For those of you who didn’t try to use Skype – well thankfully you were not affected but we want to reassure everyone that Skype is now working happily and the problem is fixed.

We know we have many faithful users out there who give us feedback (good and bad) on what we’re doing as a company. The Skype community makes us what we are. Without you, our users, we simply wouldn’t exist. We’ve helped people stay in touch with their friends and family over the past four years without any massive hitch and we want it to stay that way.

When the unexpected happens, it’s important to remember the people who stuck behind us and whose loyalty humbled us. I want to thank everyone for their support, patience and being part of the Skype community. And for those of you who missed out on using Skype last week – I want to especially thank you as well.

As a goodwill gesture to all you faithful Skype Pro, Skype Unlimited, SkypeIn or Skype Voicemail customers, we’re adding an additional seven days to your current subscription, free of charge. And even if you didn’t miss out on using Skype last week – you can still have a week free on Skype, on the house!

So please enjoy it, call your loved ones, friends, family and colleagues and thanks again.

Talk soon,
The people at Skype

Kudos to Skype for adding 7 days to paid-subscribers accounts, and 7 free days to everybody else. Skype handled themselves very well, don’t you think?

skype credit?

August 16, 2007 under Skype

As of this very moment, Skype‘s network is down:

UPDATED 14:02 GMT: Some of you may be having problems logging into Skype. Our engineering team has determined that it’s a software issue. We expect this to be resolved within 12 to 24 hours. Meanwhile, you can simply leave your Skype client running and as soon as the issue is resolved, you will be logged in. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Additionally, downloads of Skype have been temporarily disabled. We will make downloads available again as quickly as possible.

For those using the Skype client for free IM and computer-to-computer communication, they should be mildly annoyed. Does this mean that those of us paying the annual fee for SkypeOut will receive some sort of credit for the loss of service? I know that Rogers will offer credits if you complain during a TV and/or Internet service outage. Any guess as to whether Skype will do something similar?

i'm so glad i didn't get a long-distance plan

July 21, 2006 under Computers, Gizmo, Internet, Skype, VoIP

A while back, I was pleased when I heard Skype was allowing free Skype-to-landline calls to/from Canada and the US. However, the stipulation is that it will be free until December 31, 2006. After that, it’s any body’s guess what eBay (who own Skype) will do; continue this bit o’ loveliness or not. Everytime I’ve used it, the experience has been great. The last thing I want is to be sweating, shaking and vomiting due to free long-distance withdrawal if eBay decides to charge for this next year. The scene in Trainspotting when Ewan McGregor’s character is self-detoxing at his parents’ place…that could be me. But it won’t be.

The Gizmo Project has made things interesting by announcing free Gizmo-to-landline calls to/from 60 countries for ever. I’ve had Gizmo installed on my desktop at home for a few months but I’ve never used it since I don’t have anybody in my Gizmo buddy list, and I don’t think it matters. I’ll make it my new [ahem] phone for calling people outside of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge. I’ll even install it on my laptop should I need to call long-distance on the road and don’t want to use up minutes on the ol’ mobile phone. the only gotcha is that unlike Skype, the person with the landline that you wish to call needs to create a Gizmo account first. They don’t actually need the software (which is open-source); just an account. Even for those that don’t have a computer (ex: my aunts and uncles in Timmins), I could simply create an account for them.

reach out and touch someone

May 16, 2006 under Computers, Internet, Skype, VoIP

Last night I read on Digg that Skype is allowing SkypeOut calls to/from Canada and the US for free…at least until December 31, 2006 for now. Read more about it here:

http://share.skype.com/sites/en/2006/05/free_calls_to_all_landlines_an.html

Apparently there’s a problem in that if your IP address is within the range of 70.x.x.x to 79.x.x.x, this might not work. I’m in that range at the moment 😐 I’ll test it out tonight and hopefully discover that I’m not affected. If it works, I’ll pat myself on the back for not signing up for a long distance plan when I switched my landline service from Bell to Rogers earlier this year. If it doesn’t work, I’ll continuously renew my IP in the hopes that I’ll end up in a different pool πŸ˜‰
